Abu Dhabi Tour 2018: tappa e generale a Valverde!

Sul traguardo della 5^ ed ultima tappa dell’Abu Dhabi Tour 2018 , Jebel Hafeet, Alejandro Valverde Movistar vince la tappa e si aggiudica la classifica generale. Al secondo posto Miguel Angel Lopez Moreno Astana ed al terzo Julian Alaphilipe Quick-Step Floors. Ottimo sesto posto di Davide Formolo Bora Hansgrohe.

In classifica generale, Valverde vince con 17” di vantaggio su Wilco Kelderman Team Sunweb, secondo, e 29” su Lopez terzo. Formolo conquista anche il sesto posto nella generale.

La frazione odierna si è aperta subito con una fuga composta da una decina di uomini tra cui velocisti come André Greipel  (Lotto Soudal) o Rudy Barbier  (AG2R La Mondiale). Il gruppo non li ha mai lasciati andare e il divario si è quasi annullato ai piedi dell’ascesa finale, dove  i fuggitivi conservavano un margine di soli due minuti da un gruppo guidato dalla UAE Team Emirates . Fin dalle prime rampe, il gruppo di testa esplode e in testa rimangono solo in tre, tra cui Greipel e Nicolo Bonifazio Team Bahrain Merida. Ci sono ancora 8 chilometri di salita quando il team di Astana prende l’iniziativa in testa al gruppo. Molti corridori per effetto del forcing della squadra kazaka perdono terreno e il divario con il terzetto di testa scende vertiginosamente.

A perdere terreno sono prima Bonifazio e poi Greipe, mentre al comando resta solo  Lawson Craddock  (EF Education First). Nel gruppo continua l’azione dell’Astana che fa molte vittime illustri come Ilnur Zakarin  (Katusha). A 6 chilometri dalla vetta, Davide Formolo  piazza un attacco, seguito pochi istanti dopo da Alejandro Valverde . Entrambi gli uomini raggiungono Craddock  , ma dietro reagisce Julian Alaphilippe che si avvicina ai due insieme a Miguel Ángel López (Astana). Allo stesso tempo, i primi due nella classifica generale Rohan Dennis  e Jonathan Castroviejo  (Team Sky) sono dietro. Ai –  5 chilometri dalla vetta, ci sono tre uomini in testa: Valverde , Alaphilippe  e Lopez , che hanno lasciato Formolo. Dietro c’è il team Sunweb  di Tom Dumoulin  e Wilco Kelderman  che cercano di rimanere davanti.

Alla fine, un quartetto riesce a tornare sui protagonisti: Formolo  e il suo compagno di squadra Rafal Majka  (Bora-Hansgrohe), Kelderman  e Nikias Eg  (Trek-Segafredo). Lopez  a 4 chilometri dall’arrivo attacca andando in testa, ma viene raggiunto da Valverde che sul traguardo finale avrà la meglio. Alaphilippe regola il terzetto rimasto alle spalle del duo di testa ma la sua azione non basta per prendere il comando della classifica generale. L’Abu Dhabi Tour 2018 viene vinto così da Alejandro Valverde.
